1. Best Unicorn Book

My daughter has been spell-bound by unicorns lately. It all started with a new book. I have to say this is now one of my favorite reads! It’s not too long and the story is heartwarming. Since purple is also a favorite color in our house, this book makes the best read list everyday. Uni the Unicorn is all around town but just click this link and you can snag it from Amazon.

2. Unicorn Photo Shoot

Yep, this is all the rage! Take a pony shoot and transform it into something mystical. Many photographers are now offering this type of session in the spring and summer with live ponies. My daughter just had her shoot with Hannah Hilliard Photography outside of Indianapolis, but don’t worry…another session is right around the corner, and there are still a few available spots! Oh, did I mention that my styling business, The Borrowed Boutique, is offering wardrobe options??? Shoot me a message if you’re interested.

Kids That Rock Music Giveaway from The Mom in Me, MD

Music is in the air this time of year! If you’re tired of hearing the same Disney tune over and over, again and again (need I go on!), then some new children’s music may be perfect for you. This music isn’t just written for children…it was written by children and even sung by the little song writers themselves!

Kids that Rock is an amazing performing arts program, launched 10 years ago in Troy, Michigan by Kensington Community Church. Not only is this program teaching kids the basics and beyond about vocal performance, drama, and dance; it is inspiring them to compose and create their own original pieces. How cool is that!Cute little boy with his old saxophone is sitting on a suitcase

Kids that Rock believes that every child should have the opportunity to shine and see their own potential, not just as an artist but as an individual. According to Renee Mulliniks, one of the program directors (and, one of my best friends!!! AKA she is amazing!) kids often come into the program not knowing that they are talented. Because they are given a safe environment to take risks in performance, their confidence increases and often their talent explodes-as evidenced by their recently released tracks now available on Amazon and i-tunes. Each term, the students are encouraged to write original content. Kids that Rock decided to do something a little differently in 2014-a children’s song writing competition. A panel of professional song writers and musicians chose the winners and then mentored them, creating some amazing music. A team of musicians then recorded the winning kids singing their own songs, The Beginning: Songs Written From Young Hearts!  home, leisure, new technology and music concept - smiling little

My daughter LOVES this music! She has been “singing” and dancing to the songs non-stop! I mean, even the Frozen soundtrack has become old news. The music does have a faith-based message, but don’t worry, it’s nothing like “Father Abraham” or “This Little Light of Mine.” If you are skeptical, head to Amazon and listen to a clip.

Kids that Rock has given The Mom in Me, MD FIVE giveaway CD’s for 5 fortunate winners, but even if you don’t win you can still download all of the songs on Amazon. All proceeds from the CD and downloadable song sales will go toward expanding the Kids that Rock program, providing scholarships for kids to attend the program, providing curriculum for arts based non-profits such as Urban Arts Outreach and inner-city public schools in Metro-Detroit, and helping Esthers Children in Brazil (a non-profit that helps rescue children out of sex trafficking). Kids that Rock is more than a performing arts program; It is a ministry dedicated to changing the lives of children-giving them hope, confidence, joy, and even a better future.little girl with violin jumping on a room with white bricks wall

Ayla’s Library Just Keeps Growing!

IMG_6026This week’s trip to the book store was a fantastic success! Ayla sorted through EVERY last shelf just to make sure she knew all of her literary options. We left with four new favorites! I wasn’t familiar with three of the books, but they are on the MUST PURCHASE LIST! One of them is actually the best children’s book that I have read in years.

1. Snuggle the Baby by Sara Gillingham

This interactive board book is just too sweet! I am a sucker for all things vintage, and the graphics in this book are vintage at its cutest. Not only does this book have flap and fold components, it also allows the child to feed the baby (bottle not breast, but trying to incorporate breast-feeding might have been a little tricky), change the diaper, swaddle the baby, and even tuck the baby into bed. Ayla loves it! IMG_6009

IMG_60042. Alpha Block by Christopher Franceschelli

This thick board book is great for teaching your child the alphabet. Each letter is presented as a die-cut and paired with an adjacent picture and word. The pictures are colorful and again have something of a retro vibe. It is literally a “block” of the alphabet.

3. What Do You Do With An IDEA? by Kobi Yamada

This book is my absolute new FAVORITE!! I am a fan of The Giving Tree and other sentimental and inspirational stories. This book makes the cut. This story book is great for kids of all ages, not just tiny tots. The illustrations are sweet and the story is inspiring. I wish I had come up with this IDEA for a story! IMG_6136

Check these out and let me know what you think! Oh, and if you are dying to know the 4th book…it was Olivia (as shown in the top picture:) It is definitely another winner! I have included hyperlinks in the titles of each of these books if you would like to purchase them on Amazon.

Is it a Toy? Is it a Book? It’s Both!

519xma2+zSLMy mom is the best! As a reading specialist, she finds some of the coolest books for Ayla. This weekend, we were introduced to the Whizzy Winders collection from Igloo Books. Not only do these board books have great illustrations, they also have an attached fold-out track for characters in the story. Simply wind up the included cars or fire truck, place them on the track, and let them go! This is such a fun way to get kids excited about reading. It is also a perfect travel toy. I can’t wait to use it during airport layovers!51f412d3jXL

My mom gave us Old MacDonald Had a Farm, but this series also includes Little Fire Truck’s Busy Day, Little Tractor, Little Train, Little Racing Car...You get the idea! My only warning would be that the book is designed for ages 3 and up due to the size of the trucks and cars. Ayla is almost two, and loves it, but we do have to supervise just to make sure that little parts don’t end up in her mouth! You can find these at the Igloo Books webpage and on Amazon. The images all come from the Amazon webpage. Make reading an interactive and fun experience for you little one. Check them out and let me know what you think!

3 More Favorites from Ayla’s Library

Mother Reading Book Baby In Bed Before Going To Sleep

After such a great response to yesterday’s post on baby literature, I thought I would throw out a couple more favorites! You may be more familiar with these picks, but if not, make sure to check them out.

The Pout-Pout Fish made it to the New York Times Bestseller List (this is no surprise). This book is funny, playful, and has colorful illustrations. Although many publishers frown on rhyme, this book has rhyme that works! The story has the added benefit of teaching a lesson, but not in an “in your face” way. Ayla loves looking at the pictures, and now her favorite thing to do is give SMOOCHES! If you visit the author, Deborah Diesen’s webpage, you will find downloadable Pout-Pout Fish activity sheets, coloring pages, finger play rhymes, and more.9780374360979_p0_v2_s260x420

My second favorite pick would be the books illustrated and created by Olivier Dunrea, including the Gossie and Friends series (another New York Times Bestseller). The Gossie and Friends series has a small board book gift set. These tiny board books are perfect for little hands! In addition to the Gossie books, Dunrea has several books in the Little Cub series. These are just so sweet. The illustrations are great, and the short stories endearing. If you have adopted a child, Little Cub is a must read!414C-wE9buL

Finally, my third pick (which also happens to land on the New York Times Bestseller list) would be all books by Nancy Tillman. On the Night You Were Born tends to be my favorite, but The Crown on Your Head is a close second. The captivating illustrations primarily focus on animals and nature, and the stories are in rhyme (again, rhyme that works). If you already have these, you may have to buy them again! Why? They come in a personalized version with your child’s name. How cool is that! Put Me in the Story is one website that specializes in doing this with many different children’s books. If you don’t want to repurchase them for your kiddo, this may be a great idea for a baby gift.cover_crown

All of these books can be found on Amazon and in most chain bookstores like Barnes and Noble. The book images above are taken from Barnes and Noble, Amazon, and Nancy Tillman’s webpage respectively. Check them out and let me know what you think. Or, if you already have these, throw out your opinion.

Ayla’s Baby Book Favorites for June

Funny Baby Girl In Glasses Reading A Book In A LibraryI am obsessed!!!!! My sister found a company that makes the cutest board books for babies. If you love classical literature be prepared to whip out your credit card (Don’t worry. They’re only $9.99 apiece). While these gems have made it to boutique style book stores, I have yet to find them in any mainstream venues. The good news…you can buy them online directly from the company, BabyLit, or even from Amazon. Ayla currently has four of the books, but after perusing the BabyLit website today, I may need to add a few more to her library. How can anyone turn down Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, Sherlock Holmes, or Moby Dick-especially when the graphics are this cute! The books focus on counting, sounds, shapes and sizes, but all with the help of classical literature-Ingenius! These would also make great baby shower and first birthday gifts just because they are so pretty. If you want to spend a little more you can get the playsets which include punch out figures of the characters and shapes. Check them out, and let me know what you think. The images below are just a sampling of their work, and these images come directly from the BabyLit website at http://www.babylit.com
